Kid theory on recipe's

Jameson has been watching me make all his favorite foods. such as Ramen and scrambled eggs.( not kidding he loves these two "meals" and would eat it everyday.) While sitting at the table He informed me that he knows the recipe for Ramen.
Smiling, I asked what that is.
His reply:
"first put some water in a pan
then boil it
then break the noodles in half( I break the noodles so they don't take for ever to wrap around the fork)
poke em with a fork until they let go of each other.
put the sauce in it and stir it."

I said that was pretty dead on "recipe" but informed him he was not allowed to try to make it till he is just a bit older. ( how old do kids have to be to use a stove? I'm freaked out by letting them try this.)

Yesterday he was looking for an after school snack and found the eggs at which he asked what is the "Recipe" for scrambled eggs.
When I looked at him with question and informed him we weren't making scrambled eggs for snack..
He understood that. But started giving me his best guess as to how to "make" them
which was: "crack some eggs. put in some milk... mom, does the milk go in before the eggs or after the eggs?"...... and then keep scrapping them till there lumpy."
I laughed. I wanted to know why he need to know this right now.
He said," I need the recipe so when I get old, I can make it by myself."

Well at least his willing to learn to cook... I should probably find something he can"make" in the microwave since for right now the stove is out of the question.

My mom let me bake my own cake from SCRATCH by the time I was 8. Yeah, maybe she was a little nuts, but I was a VERY mature and responsible 8-year-old. I think she helped me the first time and taught me to "put things away as you use them". I still do that.

I'd say, if you're feeling adventerous, let your big boy cook things himself with supervision. That might reassure you (or not) that he knows what he's doing (or that he hasn't got a clue) and then you might know when you can let him use the stove.

BTW, I have some cake-made-in-the-microwave recipes... Interested?

On my mission we used to crack an egg or two into boiling Ramen right after the sauce for a kind of egg drop soup with noodles.

Maybe for now he would appreciate an easy bake oven!!! Can you make scrambled eggs in those? And do they come in BLUE? I agree, I have no idea at what age they can start "cooking"-but how cute that he wants to learn!!!

That is fun. I agree with irish cream. It sounds like he has desire...I say take it while you can....just stay close. I learned to sew by trying it as a little girl (sneaking into locked sewing room) but I was little and learned. Just stay close by and watch him amaze you.

What a smart kid.

Brittany is 9 and we've let her use the stove for proabably about the past 6 months but we have very strict rules about WHEN she can use it and WHAT she can make.

We're lazy at our house so we do Ramen in the microwave. It is also possible to make scrambled eggs in the microwave. I never knew this but Brittany has kids recipe book that gives instructions and it actually does work. If you're interested, let me know and I'll pass it along.

That is wonderful that he wants to learn how to cook. Maybe with you near by that would work just fine.

That is awesome! Abbey told me that she can make corndogs all by herself for Hunter, that and she is officially the popcorn maker in the family. Abbey is totally into helping with adding ingredients to my recipes, and turning on the oven for me. WTG Jman. You are a soon to be chef indeed
